Verba Sacra: An A to Z journey through Latin and the Latin Mass for Children (Digital Download)

Welcome to Verba Sacra, a joyful guide to help your 3–8 year-old explore basic Latin through the Tridentine Mass, the Church’s traditional Latin liturgy.

This A–Z downloadable book invites your child to discover the Mass’s treasures through simple Latin words like “Altare” and “Fides,” each paired with an English or Spanish translation (choose which language you would like to purchase when adding the download to your basket), pronunciation and their wider context within the mass.

What’s included for each letter?

• Latin word: e.g. Altare (in ecclesiastical latin)
• English or Spanish translation: Altar
• English or Spanish pronunciation: (Al-TAH-ray)
• Latin phrase using the word: Altare tuum, Domine, sanctificetur
• English or Spanish translation of the phrase + context: “May your altar, O Lord, be sanctified”.— A traditional phrase used during church consecration
• Timeless Catholic artwork depicting a scene related to the word/ phrase

Ways to use the booklet:

• Introduce Latin words + phrases to older children who can already read
• Introduce the ABCs to younger children, and pin these images up for daily reminders as they learn
• Start to practice short Latin phrases/ translation with older children
• Use as part of a homeschool unit on Latin, the Tridentine Mass or classical Catholic artwork

Why did we design this downloadable book?

Because we believe (and we know we aren’t the only ones) that the Tridentine Mass is a sacred gift and this booklet will help young children adventure through it, one Latin word, prayer and classical artwork at a time.

This booklet includes notes for parents and grandparents, so that you feel encouraged to start introducing Latin words and prayers to your young children. The beauty of the Latin language and liturgical is not beyond them – and with a little practice and simple steps,

The booklet also includes some notes for parents/ grandparents for how to use the words, phrases and artwork to help bring the beauty of the Latin liturgy alive for the next generation.

The booklet offers TWO options for download: in A to Z order (for printing and using as part of a binder for homeschooling, or to pin up on the wall for easy letter/ phrase recognition) OR formatted for printing into an A4 booklet (for you to then staple together and take to mass with you).
